Jewelry and art go hand in hand. Some pieces are so intricate and valuable that they’re considered masterpieces—just take a look at the French Crown Jewels housed in the Louvre's Galerie d’Apollon. But in the early 20th century, French jewelry house Boucheron brought art and jewelry even closer, drawing from one of the most famous images in art history to design a tiara like no other.

The Boucheron Wave Tiara was crafted by master goldsmith Coulot in 1910. The design, believed to be built on a delicate platinum frame was inspired by Hokusai's famous woodblock print The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Within the limits of the medium, Coulot replicated the breaking waves with successive crescents adorned with diamonds.

The top of each wave on the tiara is rendered with larger diamonds, while smaller stones serve as structure for each of the waves. Instead of going for a symmetrical design, as most tiaras do, the goldsmith goes for a dynamic look to evoke the power of the ocean. This was also achieved by the meticulous setting technique, which likely employed techniques like millegrain and tremblant.

The Boucheron Wave Tiara has been said to represent two moments in art history. The first is the interest in Japanese art that emerged in Europe after the opening of the Meiji era at the end of the 19th century, which can also be noticed in Post-Impressionism artists such as Van Gogh. The second is the influence of art nouveau—particularly its veneration of organic shapes and motifs inspired by nature—beyond canvases and into more tangible items, such as fashion and jewelry.

Little is known about the Boucheron Wave Tiara beyond its creation. Not only is there no record of the original owner, but no one knows who commissioned it from the Boucheron house either. Where it has been ever since it was finished also remains unknown. All we currently have is a black and white photograph of the object.

There is also a replica that, while it lacks many of the details of the original, allows us to get a glimpse at how the original would have looked. Should it ever appear, it would be a thrilling moment for both the jewelry and art worlds.

Designer Kathryn Reid is not your typical jeweler. Her high-quality and unique designs break away from traditional norms in the jewelry industry. This is particularly evident in her latest Nose Ring collection. These uniquely crafted accessories are not your typical “nose rings” meant for human noses. Instead, they are rings meant for the human finger that happen to be shaped like animal noses.

Reid's snout-shaped finger rings feature six different animals: a dog, a cat, a horse, a pig, a cow, and a bull. Her artistry is evident in the details of each schnoz, where a combination of textures and shaping allows the different noses to be easily distinguished. The rings are all at once hyper-detailed and playful. There's no denying the craftsmanship of each handmade piece of jewelry, but there's also an irrefutable sense of humor and whimsy about them. The bull ring even comes equipped with its very own nose ring, making it inherently humorous (and meta).

According to Reid, her inspiration for the rings comes from her upbringing on the North Coast of Ireland, where she grew up on a farm. After graduating form Edinburgh College of Art, the jewelry designer moved back to Ballymoney, Northern Ireland, where she established a small business—aptly called Kathryn Reid Jewellery—on her family farm. Her creations draw from her personal experiences, reflecting the captivating beauty of Northern Ireland and her cherished farm life. The dog nose ring, inspired by her late dog Theo, was crafted as a tribute to all beloved pets that have been loved and lost.

Each piece from the collection caters perfectly to pet owners, animal lovers, and anyone seeking a uniquely crafted piece. Reid’s other collection, Cracked, is also evidently inspired by her life on the farm. In this series, she utilizes the symbol of a cracked eggshell as the centerpiece of delicate and whimsical jewelry pieces. Reid's artistic vision allows her to transform everyday farm elements into beautiful, wearable art.

The Light Up Wood Earrings are battery powered, and can be screwed tight or loose to turn them on or off. These drop earrings work with an LED inside, which is powered by an LR41 replaceable battery, to illuminate the wearer. The light inside can also be customized, as Cassidy offers the earrings in standard amber glow as well as blue, pink, and red options. This makes them ideal for music festivals, special occasions, or even sporting events.

Representations carved into stone have a long history. From Roman busts to Victorian cameos, stone likenesses capture those who were loved and lost. Cameos in particular are a wearable reminder of loved ones or tributes to mythical figures and great leaders. Crafted since ancient days, they can be made out of a variety of materials. One exceptional first century CE example, discovered on the hand of a woman in a Roman tomb, is crafted of gold and rock crystal. However, rather than being carved into the outer face of the stone, the shockingly realistic cameo depiction of the woman's deceased son is carved behind the stone creating a “hologram” of life lost.

The ring belonged to Aebutia Quarta, a Roman noblemwoman. Her tomb is known as the Hypogeum of the Garland. Discovered in Italy in the year 2000 at the Grottaferrata site, it also contains the remains of her son Carvilius Gemellus. Both sets of remains were covered by floral garlands, hence the name of their tomb. The son clearly died shortly before the mother at the young age of 18. His body is remarkably well preserved, and indicates death from either an injury or poisoning.

On the mother's finger was found a gold and quartz ring befitting of her high social statement. Currently, the ring is held in the Museo Archeologica Nazionale di Palestrina in Italy. It features a gold band set with a cabochon of rock crystal. Behind that seems to glow a holographic face, that of Aebutia's son, buried nearby. Unlike a traditional cameo which is carved in bas-relief, the figure here is carved on the back of the stone into its volume to create the life-like 3D illusion. This token was likely created after the son's death and before his mother's as a reminder of her beloved and a token of grief. Today, the ring is a symbol of craftsmanship, grief, and love.

This ancient ring, created in the 1st century CE, immortalizes a woman's deceased son in a clever rock crystal cameo “hologram.”
