Cats and dogs are often seen as sworn enemies, but despite their hilarious antics and infamous squabbles, they can sometimes surprise us by becoming the best of frenemies. One pet pair perfectly illustrated this in a video shared by their owner. Using GPS trackers by Tractive, the pet owner traced the live location of both pets to show how his cat secretly follows him and the dog every time they go for a walk.

The video shows a satellite view of both pets’ paths, revealing that while the dog loyally followed its owner on the sidewalk, the cat—secretly eager to join in—took a winding route through the bushes, stealthily trailing behind to avoid detection. Perhaps the cat is following them out of curiosity, or maybe it just wants to stay close to its family, while maintaining a cool, distant facade. Either way, the video just goes to show that maybe cats aren’t so unpredictable after all.

While the video is a heartwarming reminder of how cats and dogs can be friends, some Redditors have pointed out that letting your cat roam outside might not be so great for local wildlife. If you have a cat and want to let them explore outdoors, it's a good idea to equip them with a bell. This gives birds and other small animals a better chance to escape from these natural-born hunters.

Check out the video below, and if you're curious about tracking your own pets' adventures, head over to the Tractive website to see how it’s done.

A pet owner put Tractive GPS trackers on his cat and dog. While on a dog walk, the tracker shows how the cat follows its human and the family dog the whole time.

For astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), living in zero gravity is challenging enough while awake, but have you ever wondered how they manage to sleep? American astronaut Sunita (Suni) L. Williams shared a fun video tour of the ISS, showing us exactly how astronauts catch their Zs in space.

Williams became a NASA astronaut in 1998 and is currently on her third mission aboard the International Space Station. The video shared in 2012 is from her time as a commander of Expedition 33. She showcases Node 2, also known as Harmony, which is the “utility hub” of the International Space Station. It’s where four of the six crew members sleep in individual sleeping cabins.

“People always ask about sleeping in space,” Williams says in the video. “You don’t really have the sensation of laying down. You just sit in your sleeping bag.” As she floats into one of the sleeping cabins, she explains that each one is “sort of like a little phone booth.” Inside, there's a sleeping bag that keeps the astronauts in  one spot so they don’t “fly all over the place.” There’s also a computer, books, clothes, and “other things that make it sort of like home.” Williams explains that you can sleep in any orientation. “I don’t have any sensation in my head that tells me I’m upside down,” she says. “So it really doesn’t matter.”

Williams is currently serving as the co-pilot of the Crew Flight Test mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Launched June 5, 2024, the crew was originally expected to spend about eight days in space, but technical issues have resulted in them being on the craft for over 50 days. However, Williams, commander Barry “Butch” Wilmore, and the other crew members are doing everything they can to remain calm and find a way to land safely back on Earth.

There are rumors about a contingency plan for Williams and Wilmore to hop aboard a commercial crew flight back to Earth with the SpaceX Dragon Crew, who plan to launch to the ISS next month. But for now, NASA still hopes to have the pair return on Starliner.

“I have a real good feeling in my heart that this spacecraft will bring us home, no problem,” Williams revealed. “We’re learning now to optimize our specific situation and make sure that we know everything about it.”

Watch Williams’ video tour below.

American astronaut Suni Williams reveals how she and her crew members do ordinary things in space including how astronauts sleep on the International Space Station.

This tour, given nearly 12 years ago, recently went viral on Reddit with many commenters weighing in with their opinions on the bizarre living conditions.

From 3D paintings to textile landscapes, artists around the world are pushing the boundaries of art with experimental mediums. Now, Beijing-based artist Lesouls is taking creative innovation to an extraordinary level. His breathtaking acrylic paintings undergo a dramatic transformation when exposed to a lit match, revealing hidden layers and effects that illuminate the canvas.

Lesouls shares videos on Instagram where you can watch his paintings transform right before your eyes when he introduces them to fire. His landscapes, often featuring solitary figures or couples in remote settings, are impressive in their own right; but, once the flame comes in close proximity to the canvas, they're visually elevated. Suddenly, hidden details like petals, leaves, paths, and the moon magically emerge.

Lesoul's work is often compared to sorcery by his followers, but like any great magician, he keeps his secrets well-guarded. The precise method he uses to blend light, fire, and smoke into his paintings remains a mystery. However, in one Instagram post showcasing a campfire that seemingly ignites, Lesouls describes his work as “an electronic art installation that can be used continuously.”

Many of his works seem to use a special pigment that only reveals its secrets when exposed to heat or light. In others, Lesouls seems to use real fire on specific parts of the canvas, giving the impression that certain areas contain some sort of igniting material. No matter how he does it, each interactive painting grabs your attention and sparks your imagination, blending art with reality in a way that feels truly magical.

Check out some more interactive artworks below and you can find even more on Lesouls' Instagram.

For many, denim is a wardrobe staple, but for London-based artist Ian Berry, it’s a creative medium. For the last two decades, Berry has used the navy blue fabric to create intricate installations, iconic portraits, and even photorealistic depictions of California. And his latest creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used. Titled Secret Garden and currently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work reimagines a serene setting with a fish pond, flowers, and vines—all crafted from recycled denim jeans.

The Secret Garden installation was first exhibited at the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site-specific locations and galleries worldwide. Originally designed for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature.

“The idea came from thinking many kids don't have their own gardens and thinking of community gardens nestled away in between buildings and trying to inspire them to seek them out,” Berry tells My Modern Met. “It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as well as helping young minds think about where things come from.” The artist even showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from. “It was amazing to see so many baffled at the idea,” he recalls. “It enabled educators to talk about how the installation was plants turned to pants, then back to plants again.”

While the most recent Secret Garden installation isn't specifically designed for children, it still evokes a childlike sense of wonder. Visitors can walk through the denim garden path and find wisteria and vines dangling above them. Various plants and flowers are depicted in shades of indigo, including roses, alocasias, begonias, and cacti. There’s even a peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim Koi fish, lily pads, and a central water feature. Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of detail that it's easy to forget the entire installation is handmade from denim.

The Secret Garden will be on display from July 13 to September 8, 2024, at the Garden Museum. A complementary program of activities and workshops inspired by the installation will be offered free of charge, catering to all ages. These include textile flower collages, denim rag rugs, clay and felt cacti making, and cyanotype printing.

Before the invention of the photographic camera, transferring a real-life image onto a sheet of paper or another flat surface was no easy feat. Renaissance artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci first described a mechanism that would make drawing in perfect perspective much easier to achieve, something that would later be known as camera obscura. Rather than meticulously measuring out the lengths and angles of a subject or scene, camera obscura offers a shortcut. The controversial invention allowed artists to simply trace lines and shapes from a projected image onto their canvas.

What Is Camera Obscura?

Illustration of Camera Obscura

Camera obscura (meaning “dark room” or “dark chamber” in Latin) is a box-shaped device used as an aid for drawing or entertainment. Similar to a pinhole camera, it lets light in through a small opening on one side and projects a reversed and inverted image on the other.

How It Works

Camera Obscura

The camera obscura principle, illustrated by James Ayscough in “A short account of the eye and nature of vision,” 1755 (Photo: Wikimedia Commons, Public domain)

As the name suggests, many historical camera obscura experiments were performed in a darkened room. The surroundings of the projected image have to be relatively dark for the image to be clear. The human eye works a lot like the camera obscura; both have an opening (pupil), a biconvex lens for refracting light, and a surface where the image is formed (retina).

Early camera obscura devices were large and often installed inside entire rooms or even a tent. Later, portable versions made from wooden boxes often had a lenses instead of pinholes, allowing users to adjust the focus. Some portable box camera obscuras also featured an angled mirror, allowing the image to be projected the right way up.

The History of Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura Box Illustration

The earliest written record of the camera obscura theory in antiquity can be found in 5th century bc. The studies of Chinese philosopher Mo Ti (470 to 390 BCE) (also known as Mozi), who founded Mohism recorded that the image in a camera obscura is flipped upside down because rays of light travel in straight lines from its source.

Diagram of Camera Obscura

Anthemius of Tralles's diagram of light-rays reflected with plane mirror through hole (Photo: Wikimedia Commons, Public domain)

During the 4th century, Greek philosopher Aristotle noticed that sunlight passing through gaps between leaves projects an image of solar eclipses on the ground. The phenomenon was also noted by 6th-century Greek mathematician and co-architect of the Hagia Sophia, Anthemius of Tralles, who used a type of camera obscura in his experiments. During the 9th century, Arab philosopher, mathematician, physician, and musician Al-Kindi also experimented with light and a pinhole.

Familiar with these early studies, Leonardo da Vinci published the first clear description of the camera obscura in Codex Atlanticus (1502), a 12-volume bound set of his drawings and writings where he also talked about other inventions such as flying machines and musical instruments. He wrote (translated from Latin):

If the facade of a building, or a place, or a landscape is illuminated by the sun and a small hole is drilled in the wall of a room in a building facing this, which is not directly lighted by the sun, then all objects illuminated by the sun will send their images through this aperture and will appear, upside down, on the wall facing the hole. You will catch these pictures on a piece of white paper, which placed vertically in the room not far from that opening, and you will see all the above-mentioned objects on this paper in their natural shapes or colors, but they will appear smaller and upside down, on account of crossing of the rays at that aperture. If these pictures originate from a place that is illuminated by the sun, they will appear colored on the paper exactly as they are. The paper should be very thin and must be viewed from the back.

Over the years, Da Vinci drew around 270 diagrams of the optical device in his sketchbooks.

Camera Obscura

During the 15th century, other artists began to see the potential of using the camera obscura as a drawing aid. However, using the device sparked controversy, as many viewed the tracing method as cheating.

Johannes Vermeer and Camera Obscura

Although there is no documented evidence to prove it, art historians have suggested that 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer used the camera obscura as an aid to create his paintings. The theory is based on studies of the artworks themselves. Beneath the surface of his paintings, there are no signs that he made any corrections to his layouts as he worked. Instead, Vermeer created a shadowy image outlining the scene before painting, perhaps based on a projected image.

Johannes Vermeer and Camera Obscura

Johannes Vermeer, “Officer and Laughing Girl,” 1657 (Photo: Wikimedia Commons, Public domain)

The first person to publicly propose the possibility that Vermeer used a camera obscura was American artist Joseph Pennell. In 1891, he noticed that the man in the foreground of Vermeer’s Officer and Laughing Girl (1657) was shown nearly twice as large as the girl he sat facing—just as the scene would appear in a photograph.

Even if Vermeer did use the camera obscura to achieve photographic perspective, his talent shouldn’t be diminished. Painter and writer of Traces of Vermeer (2017), Jane Jelley, writes, “The image from the camera obscura is merely a projection. To capture and transfer this to canvas requires skill, judgment, and time; and its product can only ever be part of the process of making a painting. We can never know if Vermeer worked this way, but we should remember that this is not a mindless process and not a shortcut to success.”

How to Make Your Own Camera Obscura

Despite its long history, camera obscuras haven't completely fallen out of fashion. Some contemporary photographers and artists have had a revival of interest and continue to utilize these devices as visual aids.

Additionally, because of their simple design, camera obscuras make fun DIY projects for children and adults alike. All you need to get started is some cardboard, a magnifying glass, a paper bag, some tape, and glue.

When Australian singer Inoxia set up to busk on the streets of Brisbane, she never anticipated meeting one of her musical heroes. The talented artist launched into ‘Lose Control,' when the song's original artist, Teddy Swims, unexpectedly walked by. She shared the surreal moment on Instagram, where it’s quickly going viral.

When Inoxia noticed Swims approaching, she did a double-take in complete surprise, saying, “Get outta town!” She kept her cool and quickly offered him a second mic to join her in a duet. Swims warmly greeted Inoxia with a hug, clearly just as delighted by the situation as she was. Then he starts to sing, and the song takes on a whole new level.

Swim’s powerful, soulful voice fills the entire street in an incredible live performance, with Inoxia joining in to create a beautiful duet. At one point, Swims forgets the lyrics to his own song, and Inoxia steps in to help him get back on track. This funny moment just goes to show that even big stars have their down-to-earth moments.

In another Instagram post featuring the two of them together, Inoxia writes, “Feeling so incredibly blessed right now, thank you Teddy Swims for all of your magic.”

Swims is wrapping up the Australian leg of his tour, but he couldn't finish without bringing Inoxia in on the fun. He invited the singer up on stage during one of his Melbourne concerts for an epic duet to the Shania Twain classic, You're Still the One.”

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, beloved actor Shannen Doherty passed away at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with cancer. Doherty was widely recognized for her iconic roles as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, and Prue Halliwell on Charmed.

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie,” announced Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane. “The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Doherty was initially diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2015 and experienced remission in 2017. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2019. In 2020, Doherty publicly revealed her diagnosis of metastatic stage 4 cancer. In June 2023, she disclosed that the cancer had spread to her brain and that she had undergone surgery.

Despite her ongoing health battles, Doherty remained positive and resilient until her passing. “People just assume that it means you can’t walk, you can’t eat, you can’t work. They put you out to pasture at a very early age —‘You’re done, you’re retired,’ and we’re not,” she said, adding, “We’re vibrant, and we have such a different outlook on life. We are people who want to work and embrace life and keep moving forward.”

Doherty used her voice, social media platforms, and podcast to openly share her experiences with cancer. She raised funds and awareness for cancer research, offering support and inspiration to others facing terminal cancer by helping them find hope and positivity. “When you ask yourself, ‘Why me? Why did I get cancer? Why did my cancer come back? Why am I stage 4?' that leads you to look for the bigger purpose in life,” Doherty shared.

The talented and prolific artist didn’t let her declining health get in the way of her career. In 2019, Doherty joined the TV reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210, playing an adult version of Brenda Walsh, the character that made her famous in the '90s.

In addition to staying active professionally, Doherty enjoyed a vibrant and loving social life up until the end of her life. Her oncologist and good friend Dr. Lawrence D. Piro spoke about Doherty’s final moments. “In the last few hours, she was in a place where she was very comfortable and sleeping and transitioning, and she was surrounded by some of her very close friends,” he said. “The room was surrounded by a select group of friends that were giving her a lot of care and support. It was somber and sad, but beautiful and loving. The hardest thing about this was that she wasn't ready to leave because she loved life.”

From devoted service dogs to search and rescue pups, countless stories celebrate the heroism of our canine companions. Dogs are so remarkable that studies show they can help us live longer, detect when we're stressed, and even reduce crime rates. However, many dog lovers would agree that all dogs are inherently good, regardless of their accomplishments.

Sometimes, dogs just need a bit of reassurance to feel appreciated. That's why the TikTok-famous siblings—Brookie, Bryndi, Britta, and Brayden Goodlin, collectively known online as The Good Hype—decided to tell 16 of their furry friends how great they are, capturing their adorable reactions. In a viral video, each dog is shown before and after receiving praise, revealing their puppy grins when they realize their humans are proud of them.

The siblings currently have 11 dogs and are fostering another eight. Their social channels document the day-to-day shenanigans of their impressive pack, which includes a great dane named Maleficent, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Buckeye, and a Doberman named Atlas. Their videos highlight each pup’s funny personality and show just how sweet they really are.

In another video posted by the siblings, they reveal what exactly makes their dogs so good. Turko, for example, always gives the other dogs kisses, and Cinnamon, the Husky mix, sings the family “happy songs.” Gentle giant Atlas is patient during bath time, and Buckeye is the best foster dad to the family's kitten. After watching this video, it's impossible to disagree that these dogs truly are very good boys and girls.

Check out some of their adorable videos below and follow The Good Hype on TikTok and Instagram for more.

Those taking a stroll along Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island, might be surprised to encounter a herd of 100 elephants on their path. But a closer look will reveal that each life-sized figure is actually a sculpture. The incredible traveling installation, titled The Great Elephant Migration, is organized by Elephant Family USA and Art&Newport and curated by Dodie Kazanjian.

The lifelike sculptures were handcrafted by the CoExistence Collective, an organization of 200 Indigenous artisans from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan, and Soliga communities. Many of these artisans live alongside Indian elephants in India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and the sculptures are based on real elephants in the area.

Each sculpture, standing up to 15 feet tall and weighing nearly 800 pounds, took around three to four months to complete. They’re crafted from the Lantana camara weed, which is native to around 40% of India’s protected areas. The makers first photographed the elephants and then created intricate drawings to study their form. Then, it was time to bring them to life.

“A steel rebar frame is then shaped to meet the exact size and contours of the elephant,” Elephant Family USA tells My Modern Met. “Lantana camara, the invasive weed that is taking over India’s protected areas, is collected, stripped, and treated, before being used to clad the frame.” The elephants' eyes were crafted from resin and meticulously hand-painted to replicate the exact colors of real elephants' eyes. Finally, the sculptures are coated with protective Osmo oil to ensure their preservation for many years to come.

The Great Elephant Migration exhibition not only celebrates the beauty of the majestic animals, but it also aims to promote habitat conservation and human-wildlife coexistence. “This way of looking at the world is rooted in mutual respect and reciprocity,” says Elephant Family USA. “There's a reverence for nature and all its inhabitants, and a belief that the earth will look after us if we are respectful towards the earth and all of its inhabitants.”

The elephant herd is currently on the first leg of its 3,500-mile journey across the U.S. In September, they will migrate to New York City, followed by stops in Miami Beach, Browning in Montana, and Los Angeles.

Keith Haring Pop Up Book

Keith Haring is known for his colorfully energetic pop art that defines the legendary New York art scene during the 1980s. His life and career was tragically cut short, but his legacy lives on in museums, galleries, and now in a pop-up book.

Crafted by paper engineer Simon Arizpe and designed by Rosston Meyer of Poposition Press, the officially licensed book includes several intricate pop-up spreads celebrating six of Haring’s famous artworks. The pop artist’s famous Sculptures is recreated with a colorful tower of paper figures, and Haring’s famous Dog character leaps out from the book’s pages. The publication also features paper renditions of The Marriage of Heaven & Hell, Pop Shop Grid, Silence=Death, and the Houston Street Mural.

“All of Keith's pieces have such a strong energy. Even all these years later, they look like they were painted a minute before you walk into the room,” Arizpe says when talking about the challenges of creating the book. “I wanted to keep that same spark of spontaneity while paper engineering this book—focusing on the surprise and playfulness already inherent in his original artworks and transforming them into pop-up form.”

Like many of us, Arizpe was initially drawn to Haring’s work for its bright colors and bold visual language. It was only later in life that he came to fully appreciate the profound impact of Haring’s art on the political and social landscape.

“There is a photo of me posing for my senior class photo, with my threadbare vintage Keith Haring t-shirt that I loved and wore into the ground,” he reveals. “Did I know then about Keith Haring, his contributions to pop art, and the New York City graffiti scene, or his advocacy for safe sex and AIDS awareness? Not really.”

Arizpe continues, “It was years later, when I saw a large retrospective of his work in a 2011 show at the Brooklyn Museum, that I started to understand his compound legacy on the art world and queer rights. It was actually during that show that I thought it would be amazing to make a Keith Haring pop-up book ‘someday.'”

The pop-up book is a fitting medium for celebrating Haring’s work, as it is an art form in its own right. The first official pop-up book, considered to be the story of Little Red Riding Hood published in 1855 by Dean & Son, set the stage for this creative format. Since then, paper artists have kept the tradition alive with playful and interactive books.

Poposition Press specializes in producing limited-edition pop-up books, cards, and prints. Each publication, showcasing the work of contemporary artists and designers, is a collectible. These books often come in special editions with bespoke packaging, including slipcases, custom boxes, and more, making each piece extra special.

While the standard Keith Haring pop-up book costs $60, Poposition Press offers a special Altarpiece edition for $350. This deluxe version features a silver foil-stamped cover and is housed in a laser-etched wooden case reminiscent of an altarpiece. The set includes a Love greeting card and an additional Once Upon A Time… interactive diorama, depicting Haring’s iconic NYC LGBTQ Center mural.

You can now buy the Keith Haring Pop Up Book here and pre-order the Altarpiece edition online.
