From 3D paintings to textile landscapes, artists around the world are pushing the boundaries of art with experimental mediums. Now, Beijing-based artist Lesouls is taking creative innovation to an extraordinary level. His breathtaking acrylic paintings undergo a dramatic transformation when exposed to a lit match, revealing hidden layers and effects that illuminate the canvas.

Lesouls shares videos on Instagram where you can watch his paintings transform right before your eyes when he introduces them to fire. His landscapes, often featuring solitary figures or couples in remote settings, are impressive in their own right; but, once the flame comes in close proximity to the canvas, they're visually elevated. Suddenly, hidden details like petals, leaves, paths, and the moon magically emerge.

Lesoul's work is often compared to sorcery by his followers, but like any great magician, he keeps his secrets well-guarded. The precise method he uses to blend light, fire, and smoke into his paintings remains a mystery. However, in one Instagram post showcasing a campfire that seemingly ignites, Lesouls describes his work as “an electronic art installation that can be used continuously.”

Many of his works seem to use a special pigment that only reveals its secrets when exposed to heat or light. In others, Lesouls seems to use real fire on specific parts of the canvas, giving the impression that certain areas contain some sort of igniting material. No matter how he does it, each interactive painting grabs your attention and sparks your imagination, blending art with reality in a way that feels truly magical.

Check out some more interactive artworks below and you can find even more on Lesouls' Instagram.

Toddler From Ghana Is Declared ‘World’s Youngest Male Artist’ by Guinness World Records

Many children are natural born artists. After all, they possess boundless imagination and approach colors and shapes with a unique curiosity. That's why it would be hard to spot the youngest artist on Earth;  however, Guinness World Records has found him. Ghanian toddler Ace-Liam Ankrah, who will be 2 years old in July, has been named “World’s Youngest Male Artist” after fulfilling specific requirements needed to qualify.

Ace-Liam created his first painting at just 6 months old, aptly titled The Crawl. His mother, artist Chantelle Kuukua Eghan, needed to keep him entertained while she worked on her own projects. “I spread out a canvas on the floor and added paint to it, and then in the process of crawling he ended up spreading all the colors on the canvas,” she told AP. After that, and prompted by his mother, he continued to paint.

The boy has created his vibrant, expressive works using acrylic paint. After selecting the canvas size and paint colors, his mother opens the bottles for him, and lets his imagination run wild. Eghan now sees Ace-Liam as a budding Jackson Pollock, who also pouring paint across the canvas in his famous drip paintings. “Jackson Pollock allowed his inner child to still be with him, even when he was old,” she told BBC News. “His work is vibrant and spontaneous, and that is how I see my son’s work.”

Eghan decided to apply for the record last June. In November 2023, Guinness World Records told her that to break a previous record, her son needed to exhibit his work and sell paintings. She then arranged for Ace-Liam’s first exhibition at the Museum of Science and Technology in Accra in January 2024, where nine out of 10 of his pieces listed were sold. Ghana’s first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, attended the exhibition and even commissioned a piece from him.

“His abstract paintings are inspired by the world around him: colors, shapes, textures and his mood,” says Eghan. “Every painting is an expression of his curiosity and joy in discovering new things.” Each of Ace-Liam's painting sessions can last anywhere from a few minutes to about half an hour, depending on his interest at the moment. “Sometimes he leaves a painting and comes back to it after a couple of days to finish it,” Eghan shares. “Once he’s done, he says, ‘Mama, finish.’”

So far, Ace-Liam has sold 15 paintings during his brief career—excluding The Crawl, which his mom aims to keep in the family. There are plans to hold an auction soon for his new paintings, in addition to looking for new opportunities for her son, such as applying for scholarships and helping him sell paintings to an international audience. Overall, she hopes to inspire other parents to discover and nurture their children’s talents—and she’s happy to see how far her kid can go. “He is painting and growing and playing in the whole process,” she says.

You can stay up to date on this tiny toddler’s artistic journey by following Ace-Liam’s Instagram.

When Laurent Schwarz‘s parents took him on vacation to Italy last year, none of them knew that the toddler would discover his passion for painting in their hotel's activity room, but that's exactly what happened. Less than a year later, the toddler has his own studio set up in the family's home, and some of his paintings are selling for as much as $7,000. Since his mother made him an Instagram account and began posting photos and videos of Laurent's creations in December 2023, the 2-year-old artist has amassed over 37,000 loyal fans and followers.

With the boy's bright, colorful style and focus on depicting his favorite animals, he has captured the hearts of everyday viewers and collectors alike, who have been buying his acrylic paintings for thousands of dollars. Laurent's vibrant works of art have already been shown in art festivals in Europe, and are set to be shown in a New York City gallery sometime soon. Though his work is selling for a high price, Laurent's mother guarantees it is being managed responsibly. She is putting all the earnings from the sale of his paintings into a bank account that her son will only be able to access when he turns 18, ensuring he has a head start as a young adult.

For now, Laurent is having fun expressing himself through a medium that is no stranger to his family. Creativity runs in the Schwarz family, as both his father and grandfather are also artists, and one can't help but wonder if the boy was influenced by their work. Regardless, the young painter certainly looks the part, as he wears an adorable, child-sized smock whenever he is in his studio. To quote Picasso's famous line, “All children are artists.”

To keep up with Laurent's work, you can follow him on Instagram.

Pop Surrealist Paintings by Naoto Hattori

Some artists have such unique styles that it makes you wonder about the thoughts that run through their heads. Japanese artist Naoto Hattori is one such artist, as his imaginative pop surrealist paintings combine animals, plants, and more into surreal hybrid figures. Using a minuscule brush, he paints on small pieces of board ranging in height from 3 to 6 inches.

Hattori often posts timelapses on his Instagram, which give fascinating insight into his creative process. Each piece begins with a simple pencil sketch that is then filled in with an underpainting before Hattori builds up the volume and texture. Thanks to his use of small brushes, he's able to paint the fine lines and detail that bring the surreal figures to life. At first glance, they almost seem embroidered onto the background. This speaks to his ability to create a realistic sense of volume even when breathing life into characters that are otherworldly.

“My vision is like a dream, whether it's a sweet dream, a nightmare, or just a weird dream,” he confesses. “I try to see what's really going on in my mind, and that's a practice to increase my awareness in stream-of-consciousness creativity. I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, just take it in as it is and paint whatever I see in my mind with no compromise. That way, I create my own vision.”

While his figures are surreal, they are by no means scary. With big eyes, they generally seem quite sweet and lovable. Some have a glisten in their eye and look to the sky, while others are quite zen and meditative. In some paintings, there are even duos who appear friendly, whether they are separate figures or two creatures emerging from the same body.

Hattori's work has gained him a loyal following and he regularly exhibits his pieces in group shows at galleries across the United States. Scroll down to see more of his surreal acrylic paintings and discover what fans love about his art.

Artist’s Hyperrealistic Paintings Reflect the Vulnerability and Beauty of Animals in the Wild

UK-based artist Sophie Green is photographed amongst two of her most recent paintings that are part of the Commodities collection. Her goal is to bring light to the ways that humans use nature to their own benefit, instead of showing it the respect it deserves.

UK-based artist and environmentalist Sophie Green paints remarkable stories of wildlife. Known for her hyperrealistic paintings of animals, Green's quasi-photographic style captures the vulnerabilities of nature. The artist depicts the grandeur, beauty, and intensity of animals such as guerrillas, leopards, rhinoceroses, penguins, and other species at risk of extinction.

“This is not a celebration of nature,” says Green of her most recent collection, Commodities. “This collection is wildlife void of both ‘wild’ and ‘life.’ It is an inferno, shining a light on the bizarre and entitled way that humans have forever used nature and wildlife for our own benefit. Hunting, racing, bating, fighting, breeding, eating, poaching, wearing, training. The avarice is never-ending.”

In one painting from the collection, Temperance, a large chimpanzee sits on a black pedestal. With its left hand reaching across its chest, gripping the bicep on the right side, the animal fearlessly addresses the viewer. Each strand of hair is carefully placed, giving the animal a luminous presence. Green delicately painted each wrinkle, and the glisten reflected in the chimpanzee's eyes. Placing the figure atop a pedestal provokes viewers to reflect on the multifaceted link between humans and nature.

Commodities connects people with different animals through the lens of conservation, as the artist beautifully depicts the reality of life in the wild. Each brushstroke of the chimpanzee is intentional, as Green aims to capture the sensational characteristics of animals.

The artist is focused on giving back to nature, as spending time in these environments has provided profound serenity for her. Green dedicates herself to the well-being and longevity of nature's ecoscapes, challenging others to do the same. In Temperance and the paintings of Commodities, Green challenges viewers to address the contentious relationship humans have with the natural world.

Her devotion to nature doesn't stop with her artistic achievements. She focuses on the convergence of art and philanthropy, as 10% of her profits pour into wildlife and conservation charities. Green also pursues other avenues of activism, such as her online commerce site Art Basket, collaborations with the Jane Goodall Institute UK, and the IFAW International Youth Art Contest. Her work serves as a reminder of the beauty and vulnerability of the world we live in.

You can purchase original paintings and limited-edition prints via her online store. Ten percent of the profits are given to wildlife conservation efforts. To stay up to date on her latest work, follow her on Instagram.

Artist Shares Hypnotic Process of Creating Mesmerizing Fluid Art

With its stunning spirals and psychedelic swirls, fluid art (aka paint pouring or Dutch pouring) is a hypnotic art form that an artist known simply as Maike may have perfected. By using watery acrylic paint, the artist is able to pour and manipulate the direction of the liquid. This allows her to somewhat dictate the composition of her seemingly spontaneous abstract paintings. Despite the ultimate abstraction of her paintings, there are clear influences from nature in her design; floral inspiration is particularly evident. Some of Maike's paint pours are also reminiscent of the long, glowing oral arms of tropical jellyfish.

The Germany-based fluid artist starts every piece by covering her canvas in a base lather of acrylic paint. Then, she carefully pours colored paint on top of a canvas, creating wavy lines and swirls. Before it can dry, Maike uses a hair dryer and blows over the paint, causing it to spread out and form a marbled look for the final product. The artist normally mixes solid colors with metallic ones, especially gold and silver, giving many of her paintings a shimmering look.

Each finished painting is a stunning amalgamation of color, skill, and time-sensitive labor. Equally as impressive (if not more so) is the technique behind Maike's portfolio of work. Lucky for us, she shares her creative process through videos on Instagram. It is mesmerizing to watch her projects from start to finish, especially as the different colors of paint dance across the canvas, bleeding into or moving beside one another.

Scroll down to see some of Maike's most spellbinding pieces and be sure to follow her on Instagram for even more.

Germany-based artist Maike specializes in swirling acrylic paint pours.

Using runny acrylic paint and a hair dryer, this fluid artist is able to create gorgeous abstract paintings that often look like floral designs.

Her paintings are equal parts elegant and psychedelic as the paint swirls around the canvas and blends together.

Each painting that Maike creates exudes a level of elegance and beauty while being entirely a one-of-a-kind piece.

Stunning Paintings on Natural Materials Pay Homage to the Northern Renaissance

Chris Oh Northern Renaissance Inspired Art

Inspired by Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch, and other great masters of the Northern Renaissance, photorealist painter Chris Oh looks to the past for fresh inspiration. In his recent solo exhibition at Capsule Shanghai, Oh showed off a collection of paintings that merge a passion for nature with a love for this time in art history.

Using materials such as shells and antique wood as a canvas, Oh shows off his masterful ability to replicate the work of these Old Masters. Pieter Bruegel's The Hunters in the Snow is placed onto a burl slab, allowing the wood to create a natural frame for the wintery scene. In Shimmer, we see a portion of a woman's face, tears streaming down her cheeks. Taken from Rogier van der Weyden's Descent from the Cross, which was painted around 1435, the choice to paint the piece on a seashell is a wonderful homage.

In the Renaissance, seashells were symbols of the Immaculate Conception. The women in van der Weyden's painting weep as Christ is taken down from the cross, which was, at the time, a stunning conclusion to this miracle. By creating this new dialogue with the past, Oh allows a contemporary audience to appreciate the aesthetic value of the past while also admiring the painter's ability to modernize it.

“Oh’s covetous act of painting details of Northern Renaissance images onto artificial and natural objects, driven by a fascination with the natural world and knowledge systems, asserts the artist’s revelation that humans have always co-existed with objects of varied temporalities,” writes Fiona He in a text for the exhibition.

Scroll down for even more of Oh's Renaissance-inspired paintings, and keep updated on his new work on Instagram.

Abstract Acrylic Painting Bundle

There is a long, rich history of abstract painting. From Jackson Pollock to Mark Rothko, many famous painters have expressed themselves through the abstract. And while it can seem intimidating to break away from the figurative, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

This is why we're now offering an Abstract Painting Bundle. This bundle includes three of our popular online courses and offers over five hours of instruction from talented artists. Nitika Alé, who is known for her ethereal floral abstracts, shares several of the techniques she uses and she also shows how you can take any object and transform it into something abstract. Megan Elizabeth demonstrates how she takes inspiration from dappled light and records those feelings on the canvas. And she also speaks about how artists can let go and free themselves up to work abstractly.

Luiza Niechoda‘s abstract landscapes have a geometric, pixelated feel, and in her three-hour masterclass, she'll take you step by step through her creative process. Along the way, you'll even have the opportunity to stretch your own canvas and prepare a color mixing chart that will last for years.

This trio of online classes will give you all the tools you need to take your abstract paintings to the next level, whether you are a beginner or already love working with acrylics. For just $95, you'll receive three courses—Acrylic Painting Masterclass: Explore Color & Abstract Landscape PaintingDream Your Own Abstract Acrylic Floral Paintings, and Dappled Light: Learn Abstract Painting with AcrylicsBy purchasing the bundle with all three courses included, you get a savings of over 20%, as opposed to purchasing them individually.

It is always impressive to see what artists can create with simple materials. Nancy Wood is no different. Armed with only a palette knife and her technical expertise, Wood creates stunning fluid art by smearing glittery acrylic paint across a canvas. Wood's paintings, with their crackly appearance, are reminiscent of designs found on blown glass. By mixing acrylic paint and a catalyst, she is able to create circular cells that bubble across the piece.

There is something incredibly peaceful about watching Wood paint as she carefully spreads dazzling acrylic over the canvas. Sometimes, her palette knife moves in a wavy pattern or renders sublime swirls. In other cases, Wood daubs short little lines, later going back over them and blending them into more free-spirited patterns. If you would like to see timelapse videos of Wood's artistic process, she regularly posts reels to her Instagram showcasing just that.

As impressive as Wood's fluid paintings are, it would be remiss not to mention her other skills. She initially started out as a watercolor artist, specializing in floral paintings. After becoming inspired by the work of other artists, she switched to acrylics. Over the course of her multi-decade career in the arts, Wood has also designed furniture using stainless steel, glass, and hardwoods.

Wood currently has an online course on Vimeo where you can learn how to create paintings like she does. To keep up with the artist’s creative journey, you can follow her on Instagram.

Nancy Wood is a fluid artist who creates stunning paintings out of acrylic pours.

She achieves the cracked look in her work by combining paint and a catalyst, causing dark cells to appear.
