While the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is still a little over a week away, Mongolia has already scored a win. The team recently unveiled the uniforms their athletes will wear at the opening ceremony, and they instantly became the talk of both the fashion and sports worlds. Not only are they incredibly beautiful and stylish, but they’re also packed with symbols that honor Mongolia's history.

Mongolia's Olympic uniforms for the 2024 games were designed by fashion label Michel&Amazonka. Based out of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, this marks the second time the brand has been in charge of the Olympic uniforms. The company was launched in 2015 by siblings Michel, Amazonka, and Munkhjargal Choigaalaa, and have risen to the top of Mongolian couture thanks to their fashion-forward approach that marries sleek silhouettes with traditional motifs.

The uniforms draw heavily from East Asian traditional garments, particularly from the Mongolian deel—a type of tunic that evokes a caftan where the sides are pulled against the wearer's body. The pieces are decorated with national and Olympic symbols, delicately embroidered with gold thread. The Olympic rings and torch shine brightly on the athletes’ chest alongside the Nine White Banners, symbol of veneration of the Mongolian State. Details also include depictions of the Sun, the Moon, and the Gua-Maral (a mythical deer from Mongolian folklore).

The outfits are completed with equally detailed accessories. Female athletes will don intricate ceremonial earrings and embroidered bags, while male flag-bearers will wear an archery hat, belt, and traditional Mongolian boots. On average, each uniform took 20 hours of work.

These ornate uniforms will be worn by the 30 Mongolian athletes during the opening ceremony. Unlike other occasions, where each delegation paraded around a stadium, this time the teams will sail the Seine river on boats. With this combo of transportation and style, this Asian country is sure to make an impression.

If your favorite fashion icon is Slash from Guns N' Roses and you appreciate quality craftsmanship, you should check out Spanish haberdashery Blade Hats. While not everyone can pull off a cowboy hat with a skull molded into the top, watching Marcos Souto, the owner of Blade Hats, create one his custom designs is undeniably impressive.

Using traditional millinery techniques, he cuts, steams, and hand-molds fabric over wooden hat blocks. He then hand-sews embellishments onto his bespoke hats that are anything but old-fashioned. Inspired by 80s heavy-metal rock bands, Souto's hats feature skull motifs, metal chains, and even playing cards. They attract a range of customers that travel from all over the world to be get a Blade hat.

Each piece is handcrafted and Souto shares the process utilizing his skilled techniques on social media. In one video, the hat being made is for a man who endured a 20-hour-long flight just to get Souto's beaver and rabbit felt hats. At one point, the hatter even lights his work on fire, letting flames create a velvety texture as well as the perfect amount of distress.

The techniques Souto uses were once the standard, but fell out of fashion once mass-manufacturing became possible. Paired with the rise of department stores in the late 19th century, artisanal hats have become a rarity. Given the laborious process, each hat normally takes about three to five months to complete. Luckily, with the magic of social media, you get to see the complete process within the length of a Metallica song. The amount of handiwork shown all at once underscores how much of an artisan Souto is. Even Slash himself owns one of Blade Hat's designs.

Prom is arguably the most anticipated event in many teenagers' young lives. Many of the youthful attendees go all out for the evening and even tend to spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect outfit. For 18-year-old Sarah Akinbuwa, this was not the case, though. The crafty teen managed to steal the show at Somerville High School's prom by relying on her talent and determination instead of her bank account. In three days, albeit sleep-deprived ones, Akinbuwa crocheted a pink gown adorned with crocheted roses that has now gone viral on TikTok and even garnered the attention of Zendaya's stylist Law Roach.

Akinbuwa first started crocheting as a 12-year-old girl while living in Nigeria. In the past five years, she's made two big moves, first from Nigeria to New York and then to Somerville, Massachusetts. Despite all the life transitions, she not only kept up with her hobby, but started creating new crochet pieces with every spare moment she had since she wants to become a fashion designer.

When her friend invited her to his prom, Akinbuwa got to work on a project she knew would make her standout from all the other students. Inspired by the Valentino gown Zendaya wore to the 2023 SAG Awards, the determined designer picked up $60 of pink yarn at the craft store Michael's. Starting with the roses, the young designer crocheted over 100 in two days before diving into the bodice and silhouette of the gown itself. Along with a rose-covered coat she had already crocheted for Valentine's Day, Akinbuwa made quite the entrance and stunned other prom-goers. “You made this! It's beautiful!” and “You should win a prize for this!” were among the compliments she received by strangers as she was attempting to take a video of her creation on prom night.

It's not just folks in Somerville who are impressed though. One of her TikTok videos spotlighting her handmade dress has over 26 million views. Law Roach, acclaimed Hollywood stylist even commented on her video. “He said it was so cute,” says Akinbuwa, a big admirer of his work. “No one can bring me down anymore.”

While Akinbuwa has had to turn down folks requesting they buy her dress off her, she does have a small crochet clothing brand called Oyinda’s (her Nigerian first name). Additionally, she will be attending Framingham State University to get her degree in fashion design. Clearly she has the patience and persistence to create a promising career in fashion.

Even the most mundane objects you come across every day has great untapped potential. Artist Gab Bois knows this all too well. By looking into the meaning and origins of common things, she emerges with a surrealist composition that turns objects into so much more than what they are known for. Bois' sharp eye for design and creative touch unveils the double identities of everyday items.

The Montreal-based artist's work is powered by her boundless imagination. And it's only through a very open heart and mind that she gets to subvert all the objects she uses into a museum-worthy piece. “Influenced by childhood experiences of playing pretend, she brings a distinct element of fantasy to her body of bizarre tableaux and whimsical props,” reads her website. “Her unique visual language, informed by design, fashion, pop culture and advertising, approaches the mundane with a sharp sense of humor.”

In her deft hands, a couple dozen credit cards become a fashionably colorful tube top and a horde of turtle plushies is seen with fresh eyes as a green turtleneck. Unconventional accessories are also aplenty in Bois' work, whether a money clip is reimagined as a hair clip—with a dollar bill included—or a pair of croissants are turned into high heel shoes. Some of the multidisciplinary artist's most striking pieces are arguably those that include home appliances, such as a chandelier made of colorful dice or a lounge chair composed of woven seat belts.

This vision has led Bois to launch her own fashion imprint, incorporating unexpected elements to garments and their complements. The heels of her Clementine pump cleverly emulate a fruit, while the rhubarb purse looks like a freshly picked leaf bent into shape.

“Her work is a place where the double entendre of hyperrealism and the commonness of the familiar object happily coexist,” Bois' website states. “Through her imagery, the artist challenges the viewer to question what they are seeing while at the same time modifying their perception of reality. Having a deep interest in paradox, Bois positions her work at the intersection of reality and simulation, futurism and nostalgia, affect and object.”

When looking up the history of fashion, it's almost irresistible to browse through that various styles of garments made for women over the years. Tracing the history of female fashion is a colorful adventure filled with diverse silhouettes. Unbeknownst to many, male fashion history can be just as compelling. And no one has made a better case for this than multi-hyphenate model-stylist-photographer Wisdom Kaye. The stylish young man has compiled an insightful “High Fashion Time Travel” video, going back thousands of years—and even daring to peek into the future—to show the evolution of male outfits.

Kaye begins his fashion voyage in a place rarely regarded for the clothes of the time—the year 10,000 BCE, or the Paleolithic era. But rather than commissioning a bespoke outfit or turning to a museum archive, the model recreates the furs and capes of the era with garments designed and sold by contemporary luxury retailers. In fact, he does so for every decade, century, and millennia he showcases.

After 10,000 BCE, Kaye's fashion timeline skips forward to the age of empires and ostentatious robes before showing us suits from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, like the ones depicted in museum portraits and historical documents. Towards the end of his voguish video, he presents how outfits have changed before our eyes over the last couple of decades. Japan's geisha tradition has long captured the world's imagination. Many of us have read or watched Memoirs of a Geisha; some have even traveled to Japan to experience geisha culture. These consummate hosts and incredible artists are known for many things, but perhaps their striking makeup stands out the most. Thanks to the TikTok account Facts_About_Asia, we can see for ourselves the preparations that geisha undergo to transform themselves.

In a video played over 36 million times, a young woman carefully applies makeup to her face. She appears to be a maiko or apprentice. The white foundation, known as oshiroi, is also used by kabuki actors and is applied using a brush to the entire face, even covering the lips and the eyebrows. Though it's not shown, she would have first primed her face with a special wax that helps achieve the final look. After using powder to set the makeup, she's on to the next phase.

She then uses a small brush to apply red makeup to the corners of her eyes and to paint on thin eyebrows before filling in her red lips. Black eyeliner is also used to emphasize her eyes. At that point, she moves to the next step, making sure to apply enough of the white foundation to cover anything that will be seen once she puts on her kimono.

Lastly, she slips on a wig with the ornate hairstyle geisha are known for, completing the look. The video, as well as several others, are fascinating looks at the world of geishas. In one, we see another maiko having her makeup applied, but this time, the eyes are different, with red dots rather than the winged look of the first video. This allows us to see firsthand that there is great meaning even in the makeup, as there are not only regional differences but also differences depending on whether the geisha is a maiko or has become a full-fledged geisha.

Traditionally, art involves building something up, whether that's charcoal on paper or oil paint on canvas. However, Los Angeles-based artist and fashion designer Emily Starobrat magically creates wearable masterpieces through obliteration. Her brand Denem features hand-constructed artisanal denim elevated by drawings which are carved into the fabric with a rotary tool.

An artist since she was 5 years old, Starobrat fell into fashion through a stroke of luck. When the fine arts pre-college summer course she wanted to take was full, she signed up for fashion design. There she fell in love with working with textiles and headed to Parsons School of Design. Only a few years post-graduation and she has already created her own thriving business hand-crafting artisanal denim.

Deftly wielding a rotary tool as seemingly fluidly as a brush, Starobrat sands down dark jeans to reveal innovative patterns that are highly personal for the young artist.  “I take a lot of inspiration from my childhood,” Starobrat tells My Modern Met. “My grandma was very present growing up so a lot of the inspiration stems from things that remind me of her, things I'd find in her house, and things she'd carry around, such as tigers, florals, and embroidery patterns.”

She melds these motifs with pop-culture references from Los Angeles in the 2000s, the background of her childhood. “I also take inspiration from the culture of growing up in the early 2000s in LA,” she explains. “The drawing style of some pieces is also an ode to tattoos and Von Dutch and Ed Hardy style artwork.” As a result, her wearable art balances innovative techniques with nostalgia-tinged imagery to create exceptional slow fashion that is getting her noticed internationally and by celebrity clients alike.

Taking anywhere from a few days to a week, Starobrat transforms her design into hand-constructed jeans. Her drawings are immediately eye-catching, but she also subtly plays with proportion, making it clear that every aspect of the garment has been considered. For instance, her pieces that have been sanded into actually become bolder after washing.

While it's mesmerizing to watch videos of her carving into inky indigo denim pieces, she also uses fabric markers to add color and even works with undyed denim. Commendably she uses any scraps to create other pieces and only releases her work in small batches, limiting its impact on the environment. Starobrat has smartly included a series of tote bags and t-shirts featuring her drawings at a more attainable price point in order to reach a broader audience. Unsurprisingly, those sell out quickly.

Legendary fashion designer Iris van Herpen is known for the sleek symmetry and bold geometric patterns in her designs. She's an innovative favorite amongst entertainers, having dressed everyone from Beyoncé and Hunter Schaefer to Ali Wong and Elizabeth Debicki. But recently, the iconic designer created something extra special for a Brazilian lawyer named Mariana Pavani. The bride-to-be worked with van Herpen to achieve the perfect look for her wedding. The result was a beautiful 3D-printed wedding dress with a futuristic pattern, bold plunging neckline, and gorgeous lace train.

The dress took 600 hours to complete, including a 41-hour printing time, and went through several iterations before it could finally be worn by Pavani. The process began with a 3D body scan, followed by several in-person fittings, before the dress could finally come together in a specialized facility in Paris.

“We wanted to express Mariana, her love of nature, art, and her femininity while pushing the boundaries,” van Herpen's team shares. “We both feel fashion is a form of art and so she really dares to express herself to make her wedding a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sculptural fluidity of her wedding gown is seamlessly blending traditional Couture craft with radical forward-facing techniques.”

The Dutch fashion icon's work combines fearless symmetry and pattern with chic sophistication. While Pavani had the honor of wearing the designer's first 3D-printed wedding dress, it was far from the only piece in van Herpen's impressive portfolio of 3D-printed geometric fashion. Several celebrities have even worn her designs to the Met Gala, including Grimes in 2021 and Mona Patel in 2024.
